Welcome back to Song of the Week! This week’s featured song is from the Fuminamoon era. The song in question is the kittens’ song from both the original Kaguya and Shin Kaguya musicals, “Natsukashii no wa Naze?” (“Why is This Familiar?”).
This song is sung by the kittens – Mick, Hook, and Cook in the original Kaguya myus and Mick and Hook in the Shin Kaguya musicals – soon after the ship carrying the Senshi crashes on Kaguya Island. Having not seen humans for thousands of years, they question what is happening, and whether the people who have arrived are good or bad. They then talk about how they survived on this island, with nothing but each other to depend on, waiting for something, though they’re not sure what. Something about this situation feels familiar to them, but they can’t place it.
“Natsukashii no wa Naze?” has appeared on three CDs — the soundtracks for Kaguya Shima Densetsu and Shin Kaguya (Memorial Album of the Musical 7 and 13 respectively) and the special CD Eternal Edition 3, which has the original Kaguya version. An instrumental henkei, or variation, of the song also appears on the BGM CD Best Sound Track 2. It has not appeared on any special videos, but it did appear at two fankans: the 1999 New Year’s Fankan (Kaguya Shima Densetsu) and the 2002 Autumn Fankan (Mugen Gakuen (Kaiteiban)). At the New Year’s Fankan, it was sung by the original kitten actresses, while at the Mugen K Fankan, it is sung by Chibimoon actress Oono Mao along with Alba’s actress Yamaguchi Jun and Moss’s actress Ishiguro Atsuki, with Yoda Shuusuke and Yukimura Yoshiya in the background as Gallica and Damask respectively.
That’s all for this week! Tune in next week for another Song of the Week!
