Welcome back to Song of the Week! This week’s song goes all the way back to the first musical, Gaiden — Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion’s duet “Waltz ni Koi wo Nosete” (“Love on a Waltz”).
The scene surrounding this song gives us a rare glimpse into the world of the Silver Millennium. Endymion arrives at the Moon Palace (presumably, though since you seem to be able to see the moon in the background, they may be on past life Earth instead), overjoyed to see Princess Serenity, who awaits him at the top of some steps. She is equally overjoyed to see him. He tells her about how, when he met her during a dance, his “heart was decided” (which I presume means he fell in love), and that he’s decided to tell her so tonight. She says that such words make her ears go warm, and that touched by them, she can no longer dance alone. They bond over their mutual feelings, saying they are carried on a waltz, and make a formal offer to dance further, till morning even. The Shitennou and Inner Senshi then appear to each side of them and start dancing as well.
Serenity is in bliss at this point, saying she’d longed to see him, and now he’s here, and that because of this wishes must really come true. They promise to always be together, and end the dance with a hidden kiss.
The tune of “Waltz ni Koi wo Nosete” was re-used in the 10th Anniversary musical, Ai no Sanctuary, for the much more light-hearted song “Negaeba Kiss,” where Usagi (and later Chibiusa) beg Mamoru for a kiss, which he does not seem inclined to give.
“Waltz ni Koi wo Nosete” appeared on two CDs — the soundtrack for Gaiden (Memorial Album of the Musical) and the special CD Love Ballad Edition. It does not seem to have appeared at any events or on any special videos.
That’s it for this week! Tune in next week for another Song of the Week!
