Welcome back to Song of the Week! This Sunday, June 18th, marks the 9th anniversary of the sudden death of 3rd SeraMyu Sailor Moon actress Kanbe Miyuki from heart failure at the age of 24. In memoriam, I am doing a special Song of the Week this week, focusing on “Ginga no Sanctuary” (“Sanctuary of the Galaxy”), the full cast number that closes out Chou Wakusei Death Vulcan no Fuuin.
The song starts out with a solo by Miyuki (in her overly-ruffled Princess Serenity dress), followed by Ono Hikari as Vampir joining in, then the Senshi, then the males of the cast (Dracul, Tuxedo Kamen, and Mandrake). More and more characters join in as the song progresses. Then there is a musical interlude, during which Miyuki quick-changes into her Eternal Moon outfit and then reappears, singing a verse almost identical to her initial solo. Once again, more and more cast members join in as the song goes on. Then, there’s a great orchestral swell, leading into a beautifully harmonized full cast ending.
The song is a slow ballad, along the lines of songs like “Densetsu Seitan” and “HEREAFTER…,” but something about it just gives me chills. It’s just so pretty.
“Ginga no Sanctuary” only appeared on the special CD Eternal Edition 3. However, this version is credited to the Mugen K cast, who sang it as a service number. So it appears that the original version has never been released on CD. The song also appeared in the 10th Anniversary musical Ai no Sanctuary, as that myu’s closing number, but that version was not released on CD either. The song did not appear at any fan events, though the cast of Marinamoon Final did perform it as a service number after the senshuuraku (final performance) of that musical, based on footage included on the omake video.
That’s it for this week. Tune in next week for another Song of the Week! Rest in piece, Miyuki-san.
