Song of the Week – 2/1/18 – “Ai Yori Houseki Kaguya Shima”

Happy February everyone! For the first time since Kaguya Month, we have two Fuminamoon songs back to back. (Total coincidence this time though). This week’s featured song is “Ai Yori Houseki Kaguya Shima” (“Jewels Before Love, Kaguya Island”) from Kaguya Shima Densetsu, its Kaiteiban, and Shin Kaguya Shima Densetsu (Kaiteiban).

The song features the girls and Mamoru on board the ship to Kaguya Island. The girls are excited about the jewel hunt that is set to take place when they arrive (though Mamoru is less than interested, understandably).  They sing about how much they love jewels, and then Haruka asks them if they’d really be up for giving up true love for a bunch of jewels. They admit they want love too, and point out they are related — the symbol of love is a ring, after all.

During the interlude, Leah Ruby (and the rest of the disguised crew in Kaguya K) agree that jewels are important, and encourage the girls to find them. Then each girl sings about her birthstone — sapphire for Ami, turquoise for Makoto, opal for Setsuna and Minako, the pearl for Usagi, the diamond for Rei, the aquamarine for Michiru, and the garnet for Haruka and Hotaru. (When they sing through the jewel names again, they tag peridot, Mamoru’s birthstone, onto the end). They end with declaring how great jewels are and how excited they are to look for them.

The song, as mentioned above, also appears in Kaguya K and Shin Kaguya Shima Densetsu K. The singing parts are slightly reassigned in both, and the Shin Kaguya K one does not feature Leah Ruby and crew because the girls are on the pirates’ boat instead. The Shin Kaguya K one also features Chibiusa, who was absent from the song originally. (The song does not appear in the original Shin Kaguya for some weird reason, only the Kaiteiban, and now instead of being a separate song, it replaces “Yume wo Kaimasu Shima no Tabi,” which was the Senshi’s half of a Dark Menorah/Senshi song combo in the original, “Ankoku no Menorah – Yume wo Kaimasu Shima no Tabi”).

The only CD “Ai Yori Houseki Kaguya Shima” appears on is the soundtrack for Kaguya Shima Densetsu (Memorial Album of the Musical 7). It appeared at two fan events: the Black Lady Fankan and the Shin Kaguya Shima Densetsu Fankan. The Shin Kaguya one adds Chibimoon, and Endou Ado and Kawasaki Miki appear as backup dancers, while the Black Lady one adds Mamoru and Chibimoon, along with members of the villain cast dressed up as the disguised crew from the original version, and Aron and Manna in their normal costumes. In a funny moment, Kenji Urai (who plays Mamoru) points out that peridot is his birthstone too. (And he’s not joking — both Kenji and Mamoru were born in August).

That’s it for this week! Tune in next week for another Song of the Week!
