Song of the Week – 6/8/17 – “Seishun no Shoumi Kigen”

Welcome back to Song of the Week! This week’s featured song is “Seishun no Shoumi Kigen” (“The Time to Enjoy Our Youth”) from Shin Densetsu Kourin.

This song is sung by Usagi, Ami, Rei, Makoto, Minako, Haruka, and Michiru while they happily exercise in P.E. class. It’s one of those upbeat group songs that the girls sing in their civilian forms before they’re aware that any trouble is afoot, like “Private Mystery Circle,” “Set Me Free,” or “Chikyuu Iro wa Salad Time,” and also one of the seven original songs in SDK.

The song also appears in Starlights*Ryuusei Densetsu and Kakyuu-Ouhi Kourin. In Starlights*Ryuusei Densetsu, the song opens the third Act, and is sung when the girls are hanging out with the Jewel Metalias shortly after the first encounter with the bad guys. Usagi isn’t around this time; she’s replaced with Hotaru. The Jewel Metalias try to dance along but kinda fail.

The Kakyuu-Ouhi Kourin version comes right after the show’s prologue (a short dream-like scene accompanied by “NEW Double Moonlight Romance”), while the girls are waiting at the open-air concert hall for Michiru’s joint concert with the Three Lights to start. The number starts out with Ami, Rei, Makoto, Minako, and Hotaru singing and dancing in front of the curtain, then when the curtain rises they’re joined by Usagi and Chibiusa (or as Ami calls them, “Double Usagi-chan”). This version is almost worth watching just to see Haruka and Mamoru attempt to race bikes in the background.

“Seishun no Shoumi Kigen” only appears on one CD, the soundtrack for Shin Densetsu Kourin (Memorial Album of the Musical 6). Strangely, although it appeared in Starlights*Ryuusei Densetsu, it does not appear on that musical’s soundtrack. It made its fan event debut at the Transylvania no Mori K Fankan and also appeared at the Starlights*Ryuusei Densetsu Fankan. An instrumental portion of it also appears during the “Pretty Soldier Sailormoon Non-Stop Medley,” right before “Everlasting Moonlight.”

That’s all for this week! Tune in next week for another Song of the Week!
