Song of the Week – Stars Month – “By Heaven! Kami Nomi zo Shiru!”

Welcome back to Song of the Week! We’re in week three of Stars Month, and this week we delve into Marinamoon territory with the Shitennou’s theme “By Heaven! Kami Nomi zo Shiru!” (“By Heaven! God Only Knows!”) from Starlights*Ryuusei Densetsu and Kakyuu-Ouhi Kourin.

The song starts out telling us the Earth Kingdom had been a place of happiness, under the observation and supposedly protection of the nearby Moon Kingdom. But then, they go on to say, the people realized the Moon people were actually jealous of them, and that jealousy was growing. This revelation tears the “scales” off the sky (probably a metaphor for revelation, as in the idea of “scales falling off one’s eyes”), and the Earth people realized they were bound to the Moon by chains — in other words, what they saw as protection before they now see as a sort of slavery. Because of this, the Shitennou believe the Moon Castle must be destroyed, and that they, the pure ones, must do the deed. (I’m not sure if they mean to do it now, in the present day of the musical, or if this was something they were going to do in the past life, since it’s generally agreed they were manipulated by Beryl to become evil in both cases, rather than that they had any evil intentions themselves). Their reasoning is that they fight for the Earth Kingdom and for it to endure, and they know no other right course. But, they conclude, only God knows our fates.

Seeing as the Shitennou are still bad guys at this point (they get healed by Sailor Moon later), I’m not really sure where they are going with this song. Queen Beryl’s mission in this musical and Kakyuu-Ouhi Kourin is to bring the Earth under her control, since Galaxia promised to spare the Earth for Beryl’s use once she defeated the Sailor Senshi. Since the Shitennou are serving Beryl at this point (and primarily her — Beryl and the Shitennou pay nominal homage to Galaxia really), it is possible that is where they are going with this song. (Of course, anyone who’s seen the myus with Galaxia in it — or frankly, anyone who knows anything about Galaxia — knows that there is no way Galaxia is going to keep her word on this. Part of the ultimate tragedy of Beryl’s role in Eien Densetsu and these musicals is that Galaxia is totally screwing her over, and she has no idea).

In Starlights*Ryuusei Densetsu, the Shitennou sing the song in Galactica Palace, with Galaxia and three of the Animamates watching, and are joined at the end by Queen Beryl and a now-evil Tuxedo Kamen. In Kakyuu-Ouhi Kourin, the song takes place in a short interlude right after the scene where Beryl and the Shitennou corner Tuxedo Kamen, having used Chibi-Moon as bait, and Tuxedo Kamen ultimately surrenders and lets them take his Star Seed, provided they swear not to harm Chibi-Moon, a provision they agree to.

“By Heaven! Kami Nomi zo Shiru!” only appears on one CD, the soundtrack for Starlights*Ryuusei Densetsu (Memorial Album of the Musical 12). It made its only event appearance at the Shin Kaguya Shima Densetsu Fankan, sung by the Senshi actresses as a sort of duel with the villain actors (who sang “See Me Boku-tachi no Jidai” for their round) to see who could sing whose songs better. A portion of the song also appears as part of the medley song “WHAT FOR?! Shinjitsu no Kajitsu” later in Starlights, along with “Get Across the Moon,” “A Shooting Star Light,” and “Prince of the Earth.”

That’s all for this week! Tune in next week for another Song of the Week!
